Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower – Albert Camus

This autumn seems like a second spring as it marks the beginning of an exciting journey for me. As the new editor of Ryukyu Star, I devote much energy and time to cultivate the budding issue. Like a first-time farmer, I am nervous as I juggle new responsibilities like watering, fertilizing and ensuring that it receives sufficient sunlight. Under the care and guidance of Jd, the new issue slowly blossoms into a delicate flower. Thanks to Jd and the contributors, the fall issue is successfully harvested.

The fall issue embodies our OkiJET spirit as it is a culmination of contributions made by fellow JETs. Playing an integral role in the OkiJET community, our two “Proverbial PAs”, Jose and Nina, offer their words of wisdom by sharing meaningful Okinawan proverbs. In this issue, they highlight the importance of helping and supporting each other to create a more unified OkiJET community: Shikinoo chui shiihii shiru kurasuru. Similarly, Katie, the former editor, reminds us that it is essential to help each other by being a sympathetic listener in times of need.

Despite living far away from mainland Japan, we never feel isolated because our tight-knit OkiJET family makes Okinawa feel like our “home away from home”. Sharing their thoughts about their adopted Okinawan home, Gina and Stephen reflect on their JET journey so far. With the same reflective tone, Lucas, the “two-timer” on his second JET journey, highlights some differences between Okinawa and Kyushu. Like the other JETs, Cherri’s journey is illustrated through her Mt. Fuji conquest – a metaphorical journey of personal growth and self-discovery.

This fall, we also have the pleasure of hearing the faraway voices of our outer-island JETs from Tonaki and Kumejima. Andrew and Carmen finally reveal the secrets of their hidden paradise and unravel the mystery behind their long residency. Possessing mystical qualities like the secretive outer-islanders, the enigmatic duo, Rich and Tom, try to shield some light on the JET conundrum with their tales of superhuman abilities. Other more “normal” JETs like Kimberly shares her Okinawan kumu hula story while Taylor provides Halloween travel suggestions. Our resident photographers, Jesse and Tim, show us the wonders of Okinawa with stunning pictures of our playground from South to North – Itoman Tug-of-War Festival, Ikei island, Daisekirinzan and Cape Hedo.

Finally, through my Shimanami Kaido expedition, I hope the crossing of bridges and islands can provide some insights into the journey of life. Words are like bridges that connect the writer and reader. May this fall issue of Ryukyu Star serve as a bridge that connects everyone in the OkiJET community.
